Inception - Thriller
Lighting
No natural lighting while he is in the dream to show that it is not reality. Lighting is dark towards to end of the dream indicating some action is going to occur. The darkness reflects the bad mood. The darkness also reflects that they don’t have much time , which builds the tension.
Sound
The lights outside start to shake , then the room starts to rumble which creates suspense. Explosion of vehicle is the main sound , this emphasizes the importance of it. Contrast between dream and reality, waves have calming affect in the dream, in contrast to the explosions in real life. Music speeds up when near the end of the dream and closer to the action to create tension. Mysterious music when he tries to crack the safe to reflect his confusion. Finally music gets louder when nearer action.
Camera Movements
Many close ups on the faces for expressions. When there is conversation the camera is steady to reflect the calmness, but when there is running the camera becomes jerky to reflect the people themselves who are in the action. Di Capprio main focus as the main character, the camera gradually zooms in when person is talking, also slow zooms to reflect the pace of the films then quick zooms when there is action to also reflect the quickening pace.
Editing
Quick movements emphasize urgency and pace in the action, as the movements gets quicker it indicates the chase is near an end. Emphasis on Di Capprio falling into water done in slow motion, this represents the end of the scene.
